Will a COBALT server work?

Wanted to procure a new server...

just wondering if vbulletin would work.

  • Is there a certain version or flavor of REDHAT I should buy??? I saw so many variations.

Also, is the web server software a separate package that I should purchase or is it included already in the REDHAT box?

  • Considering you're not used to Linux you might prefer Redhat which is easier to handle and install(assuming you have direct access to the server) as much as I know. Never tried Mandrake but read a few articles in papers that you need a bit deeper knowledge of Linux to install. And I rarely came across Mandrake servers as solutions for hosting. Can't tell about performance, though.

  • Thanks for the replies.

I am from the NT and Netware world. I am not familiar with UNIX-type OS.

If I go with a x86-based server, what flavor LINUX should I get... considering MANDRAKE or REDHAT LINUX to get the best peformance for vBulletin?

This hardware will be purpose-driven for the forum software.

Also, I assume that MySQL is the only back-end server available...

nevertheless, the other option is to run WinNT or Win2000 Servers with IIS. If so, will MS-SQLServer work as the backend DB server?

Just curious of what my options would be.

  • raq4 would be okay for 100 - 200 users provided it had max max 512mb memory but only as long as you database size is less than 400MB.. any larger the raq4 would have difficulties in properly backing up and especially restoring a backup of your database as the hardware would not cope..

    you'd better off getting a

    P3 866
    512 - 768mb RAM
    60GB 7200rpm hdd

    to start with

  • In a redhat box Apache. PHP, Perl, mySQl and postgresql are included (at least in the professional box). The actual version of Redhat is now 8.0 which ships with Apache 2.0. Apache 2.0 isn't widely used yet so I can't tell any experience yet.
As for the flavours, Redhat has some Linux variants for business, I think. You most likely want to check http://www.redhat.com

  • As said, just told what I read in some papers here. Anyway, The administration of my Redhat 7.3 box next to me is pretty easy.
