How do I not sing nasally? I NEED HELP! I CAN'T SING NORMAL!?
I need to audition for a part in this play and I REALLY want a lead role- for once, beacause this is the last year I can do it. I have great pitch, no issues with that...but PLEASE help me sing WELL within a WEEK? That's all I have left!
Thanks!
"This was my biggest problem when I started having singing lessons. Mostly it was because I wasn't relaxed, and was trying to sing with my throat rather than the whole of my body.
What worked for me is the following activity (which I now use as the basis for my warm-up)
1. Stand comfortably (so feet about shoulder width apart)
2. Give a big sigh (think mock-exasperation, with a lot of energy in it) using up all the breath in your body. Let your muscles' reflex action allow you to breathe in.
3. Do the sigh again, but as you let the air go sing any note to "Yah". Feel how the sound rushes away on the sigh.
4. Now do the "Yah" without the sigh, but keeping the feeling. Doing this will help move the voice back to the throat rather than the nose. Visualise the sound going down the back of your neck and out from there, rather than from your mouth.
5. Do any singing back to "Yah" rather than "La" to keep the same shape.
It sounds crackers when it's written like this, but it works for me. "

"When I have young students like this mostly the problem is a lack of confidence.
1) Make sure they are opening their mouth when they are singing - there is nothing worse than listening to someone trying to sing through their teeth - yuk. I also make then laugh at this point by singing a note then changing my mouth shape from a nice open Lah sound to the shape they are making so they can hear the difference.
2) Make sure they are breathing properly, right from the stomach. This involves making sure they are stood up straight - you can't sing a nice note with a crumpled up wind pipe (I draw pictures of stick men showing how the wind pipe should be and what happens to it when they look at their feet.
3) I have a picture of teddy bears on my wall, so they pick their favourite and sing to it. (Oddly this even works with the adults ohmy.gif )
4) Singing things they know (even if the only thing they listen too is rap) gets the confidence up so they don't worry about it as much.
Then with one particular student, I did all this got him to sing with a tone that would not have disgraced any choir boy in the country. Enthusiastically told his parents when they picked him up - they made fun of him and he hasn't sung a note since - ARGGGHHHH."

"As soon as you pinch your nose your soft palate will lift, your throat opens up and the nasality disappears. For others the solution is to find their "head voice" and to make certain they are "singing in the mask" and not "singing in their nose." Remember, there shouldn't be any difference in your sound whether your nose is closed or open while singing.
As a voice teacher, one of the tricks I've used to help solve this problem is to remove all the singable consonants from a song and have the student pinch his or her nose with two fingers. Then, I'll have them sing a song like "Heart of My Heart," but substitute "bah, buh, bah, bah, bah, buh boo" for the words in the song. The proper focus of their sound should be the same with or without their nose being pinched. You can use a tape recorder to check yourself. If you notice a difference in the quality of your sound, then you probably still have some work to do in overcoming your nasality.
Another approach is to find your head voice. One way to do that is to sing an F or G above middle C on an "oo" vowel, then sing a descending scale downward through your passagio (break) to your chest voice. As you sing the descending scale, keep the tone free, supporting it with warm air. Whatever you do, don't allow the feeling of that properly forward placed tone to drop back into your throat.
I've found these techniques to be effective in almost every case of nasal singing I've encountered. So, if you have some nasality in your voice or if you know someone who does, see if these suggestions don't make a positive difference."
